Welcome to the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13)

Message from the Leadership Team

The Sixth Form at Ilford County High School is one of the most successful in the UK and in the past the Department for Education cited it as the most successful state school in England for progression to university.

Boys who study here have the advantage of being taught in an academic environment by specialist teachers of a very high calibre. Unlike many other schools which sadly find it difficult to recruit and retain specialist staff, especially in the science subjects, all of our A Level teachers are subject specialists and many have PhDs or other higher degrees.

As you would expect from an academic Sixth Form we have a well-developed UCAS application programme, which is tailored to the individual needs and aspirations of each student. The boys are prepared for university entrance very carefully, with additional specialist advice and guidance being laid on for our large number of medicine and Oxbridge applicants. In recent years our success rate at Oxford and Cambridge has been outstanding. Not only have we built up an excellent relationship with Cambridge, but we are also well-respected by many other top echelon university admissions tutors because of the quality of our students and the rigor and reliability of our references.

The Sixth Form team is committed to supporting all boys in Years 12 and 13 in their progress through the Sixth Form. Although the priority is academic attainment, it is important that students feel happy and at home in the school environment. It is our job to ensure that this is achieved. To this end, not only do we monitor the boys’ academic progress, we also offer friendly personal help and advice. Ilford County High School Sixth Form is a great environment in which to study.

An Introduction

The Sixth Form at Ilford County High School (ICHS) contains approximately 265 boys, and as such is the largest year group of any within the school. Around 40 of these are boys who have joined the school in Year 12. The remainder have come up through the school’s lower years – out of a Year 11 cohort of 120, around 100 usually stay into the Sixth Form. Entry to the Sixth Form is based on academic criteria.

We are proud of the diversity of the Sixth Form body, and of the range of schools that boys come to us from. For example, over the past five years, our external candidates came from the following schools:

Our intention is that boys who attend the Sixth Form should have a positive experience both educationally and socially. Whilst priority is given to the curriculum, and to A Level success, we believe that it is difficult to achieve this unless students feel happy and secure, and if they cannot leaven their workload with other interests that provide relief from the rigours of academic life. We are therefore keen to promote participation in extra-curricular activities and to provide support and advice for any student who requires it.
