The Physical Education department consists of 5 full time P.E specialists; Mr Kelly (Assistant Head Teacher), Mr Stockill (Head of PE), Mr Smith (Head of Falcon House), Mr Murdock (Head of Eagle House), Mr Bassan and Mr Stevens (trained PE cover supervisor), offering expertise across a number of differing sporting areas and in GCSE and A Level PE. On site facilities include a Sports Hall, an indoor heated swimming pool, an artificial cricket strip, two football pitches, a running track (summer) and a hard court area. The school also uses the excellent facilities at Oakfield Parkonians, the school’s Old Boys' Association for matches and special occasions.
The Sports Hall has four indoor cricket nets, four badminton courts, a full size basketball court, with two small courts and also has provision for volleyball, 5-a-side football and tennis. In addition there are indoor changing facilities for people using the sports hall, wet changing rooms for the swimming pool and outdoor changing rooms for the sports field. There is also a fitness/weights suite, a classroom and viewing gallery for the main Sports Hall.
We are fortunate to be able to provide pupils with the opportunity to learn and develop their swimming and water safety skills. We offer ‘booster’ swimming and water safety which we believe is an important part of our pupil’s education whilst at school and is an essential and potentially lifesaving skill. Swimming is amongst the numerous activities on the curriculum at Ilford County with each pupil taking part in group swimming and personal survival lessons. The aim of this club is to improve water confidence and develop swimming skills and strokes: for pupils that have been identified as needing additional support.
Our experienced swimmers are able to compete within Inter house galas and represent the school at the annual Redbridge gala.
In Years 7 – 9 (K.S.3) pupils are taught in groups of 30 for PE lessons. Pupils in year 10 and 11 (K.S.4), are taught in groups of 24 pupils. The P.E curriculum is allocated 2 hours of high quality learning and is planned to ensure that all pupils receive a well-balanced physical experience catering for all abilities. Currently, emphasis within the teaching programme is on skills of the major sports: football, rugby, basketball in the autumn and spring terms, and cricket, athletics and tennis in the summer. Swimming is an important all-year round activity, and the curriculum also includes Handball, Dance, Water-polo, Personal Survival, Rowing, Rock Climbing, Fitness, Badminton, Short Tennis and Table Tennis.
GCSE and A-Level
GCSE pupils are studying OCR New 9-1 course from September 2016 for the year 10 GCSE pupils. Current indications show a growing interest in the GCSE option with our largest group this year, (September 2017) of 46 pupils. This encouraging uptake is supported with some excellent results. In 2016 88% of pupils achieved an A*-B with a 96% of pupils achieving A to C. GCSE pupils are offered a residential Rock Climbing trip and use local facilities to participate in Rowing and Cycling.
We offer AS/A2 level OCR course. In 2016 pupils achieved 63% A- C pass rate at AS and 100% A* - C pass rate at A2.
Teams & Extra Curricular
The department has a good reputation for developing successful and committed sports teams. All of our teams compete against other schools within the London Borough of Redbridge Leagues and Cups in addition to London and Essex Cup competitions. Our teams have previously enjoyed success in a variety of sports at District and County level. In addition we play in annual friendly fixtures/tournaments against Bancrofts School in Cricket and Oakfield Parkonians Football Club.
Extra-curricular provision within PE takes place before school, at lunch time and after school. Pupils are provided with the opportunity to supplement their curriculum time sporting activity in a vast number of clubs and teams that change according to seasonal sport. In 2017/18 the following sports were catered for through clubs and Inter House competition; Football, Futsal, Basketball, Athletics, Badminton, Table Tennis, Short Tennis, Dodgeball, Cricket, Swimming, Fitness, Handball and Rowing.
Since 2009 we have successfully run both Cricket and Football tours to Devon, Australia, California, Barcelona and Madrid. In 2019 there is another tour organised to Madrid. These tours provide an excellent once in a lifetime opportunity to travel abroad with fellow team mates and compete against other clubs from varying nations and learn about and experience different sporting cultures. The pupils that we have taken on tour build excellent friendships both with team mates and those they play against, in addition to learning key life skills. These tours have proven a real success in developing personal qualities in individuals and cohesive teams that are then transferred to the school setting.
