Today's increasingly global economy requires a workforce which can easily communicate in one or more foreign languages and readily respond to another nation's literature and culture. Ofsted report: Provision for French, German and Spanish is very good. 'All students make very good progress because of the very high expectations of their teachers who challenge them to produce their best. The lessons are conducted mainly at Key Stage 3 and 4 and totally at Key Stage 5 in the foreign language; the subject matter is relevant and the quality and quantity of the work done at home extends and reinforces work done in class.' 'Students make good progress throughout the French, German and Spanish courses because of the effective teaching: teachers' mastery of the subject, high expectations which challenge the students, attention to accuracy, use of French, German and Spanish as the normal means of communication in class and the effective and helpful marking of students' work.' Department description: French is offered as a first language to all Year 7 pupils who have a choice between German and Spanish as a second language from Year 8. Although modern languages have now become optional at Key Stage 4, they remain compulsory at Ilford County High. At the end of Year 9, the students may select one of their two languages for GCSE. The take up of two languages at GCSE level is greatly encouraged and several candidates gain GCSEs in two languages each year. The modern language courses we offer are designed to develop students' ability to communicate orally and through written work in their chosen language or languages. A number of trips to France, Germany and Spain are organised to further our students' interest in the language and culture of the three countries. In the Sixth Form, languages are offered to AS and A2 Level. The syllabus at this level gives a valuable basis for language use in current affairs and the world of work. There is a well established work experience trip to Brittany in Year 12. The Spanish Department offers work experience at the Spanish Embassy in London and placements in Spain and a Spanish Conference is held every year. The staff have an excellent knowledge of their subject and a high level of linguistic skill and competence. There is a valuable range of teaching experience across the board. The department has an up-to-date knowledge of examination syllabus requirements and maintains high expectations and standards of both staff and pupils. Above all, there is a good team spirit and working relationship within this hard-working department. Helpful Links:
