Design Technology is a subject based around the design and manufacture of products and applications. As a department we encourage pupils to be creative and to explore their own ideas. We use a range of tools and machinery and there is an increasing use of ICT in both the designing and making sections of project work.

Ofsted report: Provision for Design Technology is very good.

'All pupils have very positive attitudes to learning and are keen to do well. Knowledgeable teachers, whose own enthusiasm for the subject is infectious, contribute to these positive attitudes. Higher-attaining pupils are set tasks, which fully challenge their abilities, and all pupils respond positively to the many opportunities to work both independently, and collaboratively.'

Department description: Throughout Years 7-9 we try to provide pupils with a taste of the three subject strands that we offer at GCSE. Year 7 pupils complete an Amazing Maze project including simple electronics and some computer based designing. Year 8 pupils study mechanisms and motion, while developing a vehicle to be raced. Year 9 pupils undertake three individual units based closely on the GCSE courses that we offer. These projects assist pupils in deciding on the course that best suits them when they have to make their options choices.

The department offers GCSE courses in Electronics, Graphics Products and Resistant Materials. At GCSE level we complete mini practical based tasks to develop knowledge and understanding. Each option also involves a design and make piece of coursework worth 60% of the final grade.

At A level 2 courses are offered. Electronics continues from GCSE and takes a detailed look into advanced circuit building and the application of electronics in the real world. Product Design (with Resistant Materials Technology) looks at the implementation of the design process through history and information into the future. There is an emphasis on designing and manufacturing a product using modern techniques.
