The pupil has certainly experimented with his application of paint when developing this colour painting from his tonal study. He has allowed his initial turquoise blue wash to show through subsequent layers and this has helped to unite colours across the page.

He has had some success matching colour to tone capturing the light to the right hand side of the face (as we look) particularly well.

To progress to the higher levels this pupil needs to develop greater control over his application of paint in order to construct features such as the lips, ears and nose more accurately. It would be appropriate for the pupil to use a smaller brush to develop details on top of these broader washes of colour.
